Improving Quality of Life
with a Vertical Wheelchair Lift
Some may wonder about the need for a
vertical wheelchair lift. After all, ramps and elevators have
been the norm when it comes to providing access to those using
wheel chairs. Vertical lifts though offer some benefits that
are not provided by traditional access paths.
How Lifts Work
Vertical lifts come in different forms. Some
are plain open platforms while others are platforms with
enclosures. A third type can be attached to a building’s wall
just like a regular elevator. They all work in the same way
though. A person on a wheel chair rolls onto the lift platform
and the lift moves from a lower level up to a higher level.
Passengers roll out as soon as the reach the higher floor
level. Lifts can either work under a hydraulic mechanism or can
be powered by electricity.
Advantages of Lifts
It’s obvious what a vertical wheelchair lift
can do. Having this equipment at home or in public buildings
can help those with physical difficulties and the elderly to
achieve greater freedom of movement and independence. The same
thing can be said of traditional ramps. Lifts however are
easier and less stressful to operate or use. In some cases,
they are also safer to use than platforms.
Homeowners and building planners have the
alternative of setting up elevators. These however are often
quite expensive and require more intensive maintenance.
Vertical lifts are a logical choice when cost is an issue.
Choosing a Lift
Most regular homes require basic lifts.
These may come in the form of open or enclosed platforms. Full
wall attached lifts are often best used for larger residences
or buildings. Choosing the exact vertical wheelchair lift model
after settling on a major lift type may be more of a challenge.
There are many lift models available. Your choice however
should ideally be based on the safety features and quality of
the equipment.
If you are choosing a lift for the first
time, evaluating it may not be easy. One way to find out if a
lift is safe and is made with good quality standards in mind is
to learn more about product and manufacturer reputation. You
simply have to read company or product pages and look for
customer feedback from review sites.
As a basic rule, a vertical wheelchair lift
should also comply with basic standards. It should, for
example, have clear weight limits and maximum recommendations
for vertical ascension.
